Interactive Shoulder Exercise Device for Home-Based Older Adults

Abstract

Injuries to the upper extremities are becoming more common with an aging population. Effective rehabilitation involves physical therapy augmented with home-based exercises, which are performed independently by the patient following a written plan. However, current exercise devices are difficult to use and don't support guided movements, making it easy to perform them incorrectly in the early stages of recovery. This can delay progress and even worsen injuries. Thus, the goal of this project is to develop a device that ensures older adults can perform early-stage rehabilitation exercises for the upper extremities correctly and safely in an average U.S home.
