Mechanical Device for Sleep Apnea Treatment

Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder in which the throat muscles relax during sleep, leading to the collapse of the airway and a temporary stop in airflow until a brief awakening restores muscle tone. If untreated, OSA can lead to serious health issues. The most common treatment is a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. The team has been tasked with designing a purely mechanical solution to sleep apnea that maintains airway patency and is suitable for use in high and low-resource environments. After conducting extensive concept generation, engineering analysis, testing, and design iteration the team created The See-Saw Bellows; a purely mechanical PAP based device to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
